Madeline shut the sturdy oak door as she watched the moving truck drive away. She breathed deeply, savoring the scent of fresh paint. Crossing through the foyer and into the dining room, Madeline admired the highly polished hardwood floors. She arrived in the kitchen and grabbed a bottle of wine off of sparkling granite countertops.

She savored the taste of the rich red wine as it coated her tongue in a celebratory sip. She had saved for years in the hopes of owning her very own home, and her dreams had finally come true. Madeline fell in love with the old brownstone townhouse the moment she had seen it. She still couldn’t believe she had been able to buy it below asking price in a red hot real estate market. Perhaps my luck is finally changing, Madeline thought.

Madeline watched the sunset while sitting on plush patio furniture in her backyard garden, listening to the birds sing and enjoying the peace and quiet. She had finished unpacking half of the boxes that held her possessions, and the rest could wait until tomorrow. The bottle of wine was now empty, and later that evening she headed inside on wobbly legs and put herself to bed.

A noise startled Madeline awake. She sat up in the dark bedroom with a head still fuzzy from the wine. She was sure she had locked all…
